Latino Outreach Consulting of NC, Inc. is pleased to announce that owner Arianna M. Aguilar was recently sworn in as a Certified Spanish/English Interpreter by the National Consortium of State Courts. Aguilar is now one of only about 50 certified interpreters in the State of North Carolina. According to website of the North Carolina Administrative Office of the Courts (AOC) (www.nccourts.org), “the term certified court interpreter is used in North Carolina to refer to a spoken-language interpreter who, through a testing procedure, is deemed competent to interpret from English into a foreign language and from the foreign language into English.” The State of North Carolina is one of the 34 member states of the National Consortium of State Courts that administer the rigorous written and oral exam each year. The passage rate for the States that administer this interpreter examination since 1995 is only 20.8%.
According to a document published by the AOC, “The [certification] test is difficult. It is designed to identify those persons with the skills necessary to interpret in a legal environment, which may be the most challenging context within which to provide interpreting services. Being bilingual has nothing to do with the ability to interpret, especially when it comes to the legal setting.”
“The court interpreting field is a highly professional and challenging one,” agrees Aguilar. “It requires a college-level mastery of both English and the non-English language, good memory, an in depth knowledge of court procedure, adherence to a strict code of ethics, and a constant effort to hone and improve skills.”
“However, I love what I do,” she added, “And I look forward to continuing my education and improving the services I provide to the community.”
Aguilar, who holds a communications and graphic arts degree and has over seven years of experience in translating, interpreting, and consulting in the medical, social services, legal, and non-profit fields, is also a member of the American Translators Association (ATA) and the Carolina Association of Translators and Interpreters (CATI.) She may be reached at 919-938-0600 or by e-mail at info@locnc.com.
